Getting to Gangtok

1. By Air, Bagdogra Airport (West Bengal)

The most common way to reach Gangtok is to fly into Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in Siliguri, West Bengal. From here, Gangtok is about a 4–5 hour drive.

Travel tips:

  • Try to book flights that land before 2 pm, so that you reach Gangtok in daylight.
  • If you're prone to motion sickness, pack some medication prescribed by your doctor, to help you navigate the beautiful but winding roads.
  • For the drive:
    • Shared cab: Book via wizzride.com. The drop point is Pantaloons, MG Marg, just a short walk from the hotel.
    • Private taxi: Perfect if you're in a group of 3–7, more cost-effective too. Taxis can drop you right outside the hotel. (Note: Hotel Tashi Delek doesn't have parking space, so plan accordingly.)

2. By Air, Pakyong Airport (Sikkim)

Located just 1 hour away from Gangtok is Pakyong Airport (PYG). However, flights can be irregular due to weather conditions, so check before you book. When it works, it's the quickest way to reach us.

3. By Train, New Jalpaiguri (NJP)

If you're coming by train, NJP in Siliguri is the closest major station. From here, it's again a 4–5 hour drive up to Gangtok.

Travel Tips & Permits

  • Groups save more: Traveling in groups of 3–7 makes cab hires significantly cheaper.
  • International guests: An Inner Line Permit is required to enter Sikkim. This can be arranged at the Rangpo checkpoint or even at Bagdogra Airport. Check the Sikkim Tourism website for updated details.
  • Mountain travel etiquette: Start early and keep small cash handy for local stops.
  • Eco-friendly reminder: Since January 2022, Sikkim has banned the use, manufacture, and sale of plastic water bottles up to 2 liters. Carry a reusable bottle, refilling stations are easy to find across the state. And while you're on the road, please don't litter. Collect your waste and dispose of it responsibly to help keep Sikkim pristine.
